Important bugs to be watching out for:
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid - The crawlers of this Adelgid are out NOW.
The females of this Adelgid are covered in a fluffy white wax and can be found at
the bases of hemlock needles. Do not apply nitrogen fertilizer to hemlocks when
infected because such treatment has been shown to increase Adelgid survival and
reproductive capability. NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY TREATMENT AND AGAIN IN
JULY.
- Cooley Spruce Gall Adelgid: Stem mothers are completely covered with cotton and
have begun laying eggs on Douglas fits. These bugs need to be treated with
registered pesticides in early May.
- Birch Leafminer: The adult sawflies are hovering around new leaves. They
have black veined wings and black bodies. Pesticides need to be applied from mid-May
through mid-June.
- European Pine Sawfly - This insect is a pest of reds, Scots, Japanese red, jack, Swiss
mountain and mugo pines. They are grayish green with white markings and a black
head. The easiest way to find them now is to look for a small area of straw-colored,
partially chewed needles. Pesticides need to be applied from mid-May through mid-June.
